MOTAC welcomes Tourism Malaysia–Batik Air pact to boost connectivity for Visit Malaysia 2026

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) views the cooperation between Tourism Malaysia and Batik Air as a timely and strategic initiative to further enhance Malaysia’s air connectivity in support of the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) campaign.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing said the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed by both parties reflects a shared commitment to strengthening access to destinations nationwide, while intensifying promotional efforts to attract more international and regional travellers.

He said improved air connectivity remains a crucial pillar of tourism development, particularly in ensuring that travel growth benefits not only major cities but also secondary and emerging destinations with strong tourism potential.

“Air connectivity is no longer just about the number of flights available. Airlines have a direct influence on how visitors perceive a destination, from their first arrival to their departure,” he said when speaking at the MoC signing ceremony attended by industry stakeholders here this evening.

According to Tiong, Batik Air is expected to play a key role in supporting VM2026 through joint marketing initiatives with Tourism Malaysia, enhanced regional links and the introduction of routes connecting high-growth markets beyond Malaysia’s primary entry points.

He noted that Batik Air’s readiness to serve routes often considered commercially challenging by other carriers demonstrates a long-term commitment to the national tourism agenda.

“These routes are vital in ensuring tourism development is more balanced and inclusive. When access improves, smaller destinations and local communities are better positioned to share in the economic benefits of tourism,” he said.

Tiong added that Malaysia’s diverse cultural heritage, natural attractions and local traditions could only be fully appreciated if visitors are able to travel easily across different regions of the country.

In addressing growing competition within the aviation and tourism sectors, he said airlines must continuously enhance service standards, including reliability, punctuality and overall travel experience, as these factors significantly influence travellers’ confidence and their likelihood of returning.

The minister also underscored the continued relevance of travel agents and tourism intermediaries, describing them as an important bridge between destinations and travellers in shaping travel decisions and experiences.

He expressed appreciation to tourism partners and the travel trade for their ongoing efforts in promoting Malaysia globally, adding that close collaboration among airlines, Tourism Malaysia and industry players is essential to building a resilient and sustainable tourism ecosystem.

Looking ahead, Tiong said MOTAC would continue to encourage and support strategic partnerships that strengthen industry capacity, improve visitor experiences and generate measurable outcomes for the tourism sector.

“With Visit Malaysia 2026 gaining momentum, MOTAC remains committed to working closely with Tourism Malaysia, Batik Air and industry partners to position Malaysia as a competitive, trusted and welcoming destination on the global stage,” he said.
