Ten public markets to be developed as tourism landmarks

Ten public markets across Malaysia have been identified as pioneer projects to be transformed into tourism-oriented destinations and community landmarks, a move aimed at revitalising local economies and enhancing urban liveability.

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the upgrading of the selected markets would involve an allocation exceeding RM10 million and would be implemented through open architectural design competitions.

He said the initiative not only prioritises functional improvement but also places strong emphasis on architectural identity, cultural heritage and environmental harmony.

“As an example, the Bukit Mertajam Market in Penang is currently under active development and previously attracted 115 local and international architects who participated in the design competition,” he told reporters after officiating the 2025 Local Government Department Touch of Success Programme at the Sungai Jarom Hawker Centre in Selangor, today.

Nga said Selangor is among the states involved in the programme, with markets in Seri Kembangan and Kajang included, while the Pasir Pinji Market in Ipoh is currently under construction and is expected to emerge as a prominent landmark.

“The Pasir Pinji market is projected to be among the most aesthetically appealing markets in the country and has strong potential to be developed as a tourism attraction,” he said.

According to him, the design concepts for each market are determined entirely through open competitions, with independent panels of judges overseeing the selection process.

He added that local authorities work closely with the Malaysian Institute of Architects to identify the most suitable designs that reflect each locality’s unique character.

“The selected architectural concepts must represent the identity, heritage, culture and environment of the area. Each state will have a distinct design, as there is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to local heritage and cultural context,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Nga said the ministry had successfully completed 15,082 small-scale development projects nationwide between 2023 and 2025.

He noted that the implementation of these projects, including systematic drainage improvements, has contributed to the reduction of 145 flood hotspots across the country, delivering tangible benefits to public safety and community well-being.

“In terms of community development, RM101 million has been allocated for the implementation of 858 Kampung Baru development projects, focusing on strengthening basic infrastructure and carrying out house repair programmes,” he said.
