Hong Kong’s The Chairman Claims the Top Spot at Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021 Awards
After receiving the highest amount of votes from 300-plus restaurant connoisseurs, Cantonese eatery The Chairman was crowned The Best Restaurant in Asia 2021, making them the first Hong Kong restaurant to have ever claimed the coveted spot since the list’s launch in 2013.
Sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna and The Best Restaurant in China, the announcement of the 2021 list was made via The Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2021 awards virtual ceremony on the 25th, streamed to an international audience.
The modern classic establishment specialises in Cantonese cuisine, and was founded by Danny Yip in 2019 after stepping away from his IT business. What started out as a passion project of the entrepreneur has now earned him a reputable reputation over the last 12 years.
“The kitchen hasn’t changed. Our core members – most of them haven’t changed for 12 years. Our rent has doubled, but we decided to stay in the same location. We’re old school, like a dinosaur,” admitted Yip to The World’s 50 Best when asked about how the restaurant has evolved over time

Notable Individual Winners
Hong Kong is also represented by Vea coming in at No.16 as this year’s recipient of the Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award, while Mainland China is represented by Fu He Hui (No.22) while Macau’s Wing Lei Palace returns to the No.50 spot on the ranking.
Den in Japan retains its No.3 place, winning the title of The Best Restaurant for the fourth successive year, while Odette remains as The Best Restaurant in Singapore. Chef Thitid ‘Ton’ Tassanakajohn’s high-profile Le Du (No.4) is named The Best Restaurant in Thailand for the first time.
Mume rises three places to be No.15, holding The Best Restaurant in Taiwan title for a third year. Taipei is also happens to house Asia’s Best Pastry Chef, as Singapore-born chef Angela Lai of pâtissier Taïrroir became the worthy recipient of the title, having delighted diners with her delicate creations for the last five years.
Colombo’s Ministry of Crab (No.29) retains the title of The Best Restaurant in Sri Lanka, while Toyo Eatery (No.49) keeps The Best Restaurant in Philippines honour for a third year. Entering the ranking at No.39, Anan Saigon secures the title of The Best Restaurant in Vietnam.
No. 18 Indian Accent is awarded The Best Restaurant in India, while the 2020 recipient of the One To Watch Award, Mumbai’s Masque, makes its debut on the list at No.32 makes its debut on the list at No.32.
