Lower prices at KLIA under review to improve tourist experience
Efforts are being explored to encourage more reasonable pricing for retail products and food offerings at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), as authorities respond to increasing feedback from travellers who view airport purchases as costly.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the ministry is currently examining possible approaches to improve price competitiveness across airport outlets, including duty-free stores and restaurants, while maintaining the quality of services and products.
He said many travellers, particularly domestic visitors and families travelling from outside major cities, have expressed concern about the affordability of meals and goods sold at the airport.
Speaking after launching the ShopLAH by Malaysia Airports campaign at KLIA Terminal 1, Tiong highlighted that Malaysia’s diverse food culture continues to be promoted through airport vendors, but stressed that accessibility and value for money remain essential to enhancing visitor satisfaction.
The minister encouraged business operators to adopt pricing strategies that focus on increasing customer traffic and sales turnover rather than depending on higher margins per transaction. According to him, a more balanced approach could generate sustainable revenue while attracting a wider customer base.
Tiong noted that the matter requires thorough engagement between airport management, retailers and other stakeholders to identify suitable mechanisms that benefit both businesses and consumers.
He emphasised that any adjustment must consider long-term industry sustainability while ensuring that travellers – both local and international – enjoy a positive and welcoming experience upon arrival and departure from Malaysia.
The ministry hopes that collaborative discussions among stakeholders will lead to practical solutions that strengthen KLIA’s reputation as a traveller-friendly hub, while continuing to showcase Malaysia’s cultural diversity and hospitality through its airport retail and dining offerings.
