Meng Foong Food Stall Takes Steps Forward

Located within Kopitiam Soon Wah, Meng Foong Food Stall has taken a thoughtful step forward by expanding its menu to better cater to lower-income groups amid rising living costs.

Food has always been central to Malaysian culture, and this sentiment runs especially deep in Ipoh, a city renowned for its vibrant culinary heritage. However, in recent years, many Malaysians have been feeling the strain of increasing expenses. Since the pandemic-era lockdowns, the cost of living has steadily climbed, with food prices becoming a growing concern for many households.

Recognising these challenges, proprietors Kane Loo and Jason Chai took a closer look at their customer base. They observed that a significant portion of their patrons are men aged between 45 and 60—many of whom serve as the sole breadwinners for their families. Beyond supporting their immediate households, these individuals often shoulder the added responsibility of caring for ageing parents, making financial pressures even more pronounced.

Driven by empathy and a shared sense of responsibility, Kane and Jason—who are also cousins—decided to take action. Kane brings with him over 20 years of culinary experience, having worked across international hotels and resorts, fine dining establishments, corporate F&B groups, cafés, and restaurants. Meanwhile, Jason offers a diverse professional background spanning hospitality, interior design, and healthcare.

Together, they envisioned a way to give back to their community. Their goal was simple yet impactful: to serve high-quality, restaurant-style dishes at prices that remain accessible. To achieve this, Meng Foong Food Stall introduced a broader range of offerings, including more economical meal options that do not compromise on taste or quality.

This initiative reflects their commitment to easing the burden on those facing financial constraints, while still allowing customers to enjoy satisfying and well-prepared meals. By balancing affordability with quality, Kane and Jason hope to uplift not only their patrons but also contribute positively to Ipoh’s already rich food scene.

Through this meaningful effort, Meng Foong Food Stall is setting an example of how small businesses can adapt with compassion—proving that good food should remain accessible to all, even in challenging times.
